If I could send a message to every 10 year old girl,
I would say:
Just don't do it.
Don't grow up.
Take every summer day and keep it in the loose floorboads of the treehouse.
Keep every memory of never caring what time it was because you have all day. Keep it somewhere you'll remember so you can find it when you need to.
keep the same, innocent love you have for your parents. They really just want to help.
Keep swinging,
sliding,
and merry-go-rounding until sunset because one minute you'll be catching fireflies,
and the next,
you're gone.
Keep making mud pies and playing pretend and loving,
and skipping,
and giggling.
Keep your hugs and eskimo kisses and
spend all day looking for luck in a four-leaf clover.
And don't grow up without remembering:
you are the girl that once loved the boys for their sweetness.
By tomorrow,
you'll need it.

Lines I LOVE:
"..keep it in the loose floorboads of the treehouse."
-merry-go-rounding
-"and spend all day looking for luck in a four-leaf clover."
this piece is amazing! I am in love with the diction and sentence structure!!
This is a great poem, at many points it made me smile. All of it is very true.
I can remember telling my mother that I, I WOULD find a 4 leaf clover before dark one night. And of coarse, i came inside empty handed. So that part was really heartfelt for me.
"You are the girl that once loved the boys for sweetness"
maybe this could be explored earlier in the poem?
or even changed a bit, the word sweetness, because i think we do appreciate the sweetness. (from any gender) I dont know, thats just my 2 cents.
this is awesome though
"Take every summer day and keep it in the loose floorboads of the treehouse"
"because one minute you'll be catching fireflies, and the next, you're gone"
"And don't grow up without remembering: you are the girl that once loved the boys for their sweetness. By tomorrow, you'll need it."
yes! stellar!
I really loved this! It definitely made me miss being a little kid. /tears
but anyway!
great images, really. but i thought this line could have been explored more:
"because one minute you'll be catching fireflies, and the next, you're gone"
i think the first part of the line about catching fireflies is great. I think if you looked at the second part some more it could be stronger.
are you really gone? or is it just that innocence? create a concrete image for that maybe, like you did with the fire flies.
oh my gosh this is AMAZING
